Those of you who are familiar with OWL publications will recognize these books as part of their excellent library. Almost every page is liberally illustrated with either black-and-white or colour illustrations and/or photographs. Quizzes, facts, cartoons, do's and don'ts, breeds, training, showing, readers' diaries and short stories are just a portion of the varied topics covered by these books. Although there is not sufficient information on any one breed to guide a prospective buyer, there is an overall summary of the most common. From these suggestions one is able to go to books on particular breeds to learn more about their particular habits. Cautions are given to "would-be buyers" so that they become aware of the problems of being a pet owner. There are suggestions given as to expenses that might be incurred and illnesses or diseases that should be expected. From what I have read the emphasis has been to make the new owner an informed individual so that both owner and pet can have a pleasant relationship with few unhappy surprises. These are certainly useful references for the elementary school library. Hugh A. Cook, Maple, Ont. |
