This year's volume in this series features stories by Peter Stockland of Quebec, Sara McDonald of Saskatoon and Montreal, and Steven Heighten of Kingston. There is a variety of backgrounds here with Stockland also being a journalist and Heighten a poet. Stockland's "Greetings from Papineauville" deals with the relations between French and English in Quebec, while "Jethro Was a Bodine" is simply about relationships. Both are a little bleak but they are also powerful. McDonald writes in a very different style and deals with people and their relations to society. Heighton's stories both have a connection to Japan. All of these stories are strong and worth reading. We will, no doubt, hear and see more from all of these authors. The book should be in all serious Canadian literature collections at the high school level as well as in public and academic libraries. Jerry McDonnell, F.E. Madill Secondary School, Wingham, Ont. |
