High Street Canada is a delightful memoir of Elizabeth Harrison's experiences as first a summer resident and later a full-time resident of Garden Island. Garden Island is located in Kingston harbour and has been a favourite summer refuge for people from southeastern Ontario and southwestern Quebec for more than a hundred years. Her descriptions of daily life on the island over a fifty-year period are both lively and imaginative. The flow of the narrative aids the reader in visualizing every detail. High Street Canada is intended for and should appeal to both young people and adults. While it is an enjoyable story, it is very regional in content and therefore may appeal to readers in central Canada more than other parts of the country. Recommended. Michele Kallio, Arichat, N.S. |
