This publication is the result of her personal mission "to paint the people within the native community who have made contributions to society at various levels of endeavour and walks of life." The book contains thirty-one full-colour reproductions of por­traits, each accompanied by a three- to four-page narrative. The subjects chosen are almost all from British Columbia. Some are well known, others are not, but they all inspired the author with their personal characteristics and the contributions they have made to society. They are all individuals who have overcome discrimination and poverty to become successful profes­sionals in Canadian society while still retaining their own culture and heritage. Art lovers will probably enjoy the paintings and the artist's text, which often explains why she decided to paint the subject and how she attempted to portray each one. The part of the book I found most interesting was the inter­views with some of the subjects. Al­though the text of these interviews is brief, it does provide some insight into the lives, experiences and thoughts of the people interviewed. In the balance of the text, the author does tend to give a lot of personal reaction to the people she has chosen for this project and spends much space on why she was inspired by these people. For this reason this book will have limited use as research material, but it can be a valuable source of inspiration. Personally, I would have found this book more useful in a library context if it had covered a wider cross-section of native Canadians from across Canada. However, one cannot argue with the artist's personal choice and mission. Recommended for high school libraries where there is a need for material on native Canadians.
