Volume 19 Number 2
A delightful collection of nine vignettes and one poem from the B.C. coast, marvelously illustrated with photographs and drawings that add interest to the stories. A.M. Feast's "The Gentle Giant of Sproat Lake" is a fascinating look at a daft, but successful, idea of converting U.S. flying boats into fire-fighting water bombers. John Watson's 'Twenty Miles to Paradise: Gower Point 1917-1925" is a charming, beautifully nostalgic reminiscence of summers spent at Gower Point. Lillian Bateman's "Fire Up Above, Fire Down Below" is a frightening story of a family running from a forest fire. Other stories touch on logging on Savary Island, a visit to Bella Coola, and a look at wooden seine boats. Fascinating, lively reflections of B.C. life and history retold in this twelfth volume of the journal Raincoast Chronicles. Recommended. Donna J. Adrian, Laurenval School Board, Rosemere, Que. |
