Although this handbook was designed as a guide for day-care workers setting up storytime programs for preschool children, teachers and teacher-librarians involved in planning literature and resource-based units for children in the Primary grades would also find it useful. The format of the book makes it easy for readers to integrate print and non-print materials found in most school libraries into theme-based units.

Teachers may want to skip the first chapter, "Planning Storytime Programmes," although it contains excellent suggestions for choosing books and presenting stories to children. The next section of the handbook contains three sample programs in ready-to-use format on the themes "Getting Dressed," "Red Hearts" and "Collage." The chapter includes songs, fingerplays or craft ideas to go with each story. The books used in the first sample program include Caps for Sale by Esphyr Slobodkina (Scholastic, 1984), Jesse Bear, What Will You Wear? by Nancy White Carlstrom (Macmillan, 1986), and Thomas' Snowsuit by Robert Munsch. An appendix lists publishers and publication dates of the books used.

The next section entitled "Picture Books" contains lists of books with reader annotations. The chapters "A Visit To..." and "Special Themes" contain suggestions for such themes as the airport, the hospital, the zoo, autumn, food, friends, and trucks and things that go.

A chapter on audio-visual materials gives excellent suggestions for using films and sound recordings. This section also offers ideas on author themes (Frank Asch) and character themes (Harry the Dirty Dog), which could be readily adapted for use with Kindergarten and Primary children.

In designing a plan for day-care workers to set up storytime programs. Helen Lerach has written a resource document which will be invaluable to Kindergarten and Primary teachers as well.

Highly recommended.
