Suppose you are an eight-year-old hockey fanatic with a thirty-eight year hockey fanatic for a father. What do you do for fun? You write a hockey quiz/activity book, of course. Allstar Hockey Activity Book is just such a book. Written by a father-and-son team from Winlaw, B.C., the book is aimed squarely at the six- to-twelve-year-old who is into hockey. The table of contents organizes the book into four parts: quizzes, features, puzzles and games. Upon browsing through the book, however, one finds pieces of each section scattered throughout the book. Thus, there appears to be no deliberate order to the book (other than having answers at the back). The quizzes, puzzles and information cover not only a wide range of topics (individual statistics to cartoons and quotable quotes) but also a wide range of dates (1917 to present). While there are plenty of questions here that any nine-year-old enthusiast could answer, there are also some questions that only an "old-timer" could answer (yes, there were some that even stumped your reviewer). There do not appear to be any errors in the answers provided by the authors. There are plenty of good illustrations to accompany the text. Some questions were a little confusing in their wording, making it difficult at first to understand what was being asked. The book can be read straight through or browsed as the reader desires. This is a fun book. Challenge your fellow staff members with it at the next coffee break or give it to your hockey-crazy kid to share with his or her friends. If you have hockey kids using your library, you'll want this book. Charles Ottosen, Airdrie Public Library, Airdrie, Alta. |
