The focus of this video is a young family dedicated to improving the environment not only through recycling but also by educating others about "going green." This education is done by giving in-home workshops to small groups about recycling, re-using and reducing (consumption). Although the presentation is informative and pleasant, it is also rather tedious for a portion of the intended audience. Adults generally have the patience to listen and learn from this type of didactic presentation. Young adults, however, may find the lack of humour and "zip" a drawback to absorbing information. Apart from the humdrum presentation, the video's strength is apparent: there are many practical ideas about how to make recycling manageable in a family, the importance of re-using materials is stressed, and the possibility of reducing the use of overpackaging is discussed. The segment about alternative household cleaners is useful, but again, not of much interest to teenagers, unless they are working on a school project about this topic. The real challenge in this video is trying to match the family's garbage output of one and a half bags a year, and their grocery shopping of one half cart per month for a family of four. I would recommend this video for adult education about the environment, but recommend it with reservations for younger people. One added note: in the opening scene the family is seen cycling with two very young children, but without bicycle helmets. Should such a conscientious group not be seen promoting an issue as timely and important as bicycle safety? Ann Fagan, Montreal, Que. |
