Kristjana Gunnars is an award-winning writer whose first novel, The Prowler, was published in 1989 (Red Deer College Press). Her father was a well-known geophysicist who was diagnosed with inoperable brain cancer in 1989. He decided against any further treatment and Zero Hour is an account of the family's vigil while they waited for his death. It is written in a lyrical style as, through memory, the daughter comes to terms with the "zero hour" of her father's death. It is a short, touching book with an unusual format. It is like a long essay divided into sections but not chapters. Zero Hour is a loving tribute to an honoured father. Recommended. Catherine R. Cox, Moncton High School, Moncton, N.B. |
