Kevin in Between in an intriguing journey into a fantastic world just beyond the real one. As ten-year-old Kevin lies in an accident-induced coma, he is drawn into an "in between" world, hence the title, Kevin in Between. It is there that Kevin discovers three identities he had in "past lives," ones that have always existed but has forgotten in each of his "present lives"! Patricia Lees creates such vivid images of the "in between" world that young readers will be enticed to enter and wonder about its existence. "Kevin absorbed Uncle Gregory's lessons like a young seal swallowing fish," Lees writes. And as for the dreams? Well, Kevin learns all he must do is "wish" for them to come true. However, Kevin learns several valuable lessons, ones which will improve his life if he can only return! In thirteen brief chapters, Lees leads her main character to make some pretty grown-up decisions. As Kevin says, "I want another chance to be Kevin." Kevin in Between is a wonderful fantasy that can be easily read in a single sitting. Floyd Spracklin, G.C. Rowe Junior High School, Corner Brook, Nfld. |
