ANNE OF GREEN GABLES: JUNIOR EDITION
L.M. Montgomery

Volume 20 Number 3
The current revival of interest in the "Anne" stories has resulted in this abridgement created especially for younger readers. Constraints of length have forced Greenwood to reduce the roles of some minor characters and merely make reference to a few incidents of the original story; however, she has skillfully maintained the thread and flavour of Montgomery's tale. Anne is still presented as a character with a wonderful imagination, a strong temper and as someone who, through the powers of hard work and love, can change the lives of people around her. Muriel Wood's illustrations contribute much to this work, lending colour and form to characters and situations that would otherwise be described only minimally. One small concern is that the text contains several sentences of considerable length with vocabulary that is beyond the reach of the intended audience. However, a desire to read the story will probably outweigh these minor difficulties. This version will hopefully stimulate readers to proceed to the joys of the original Anne. This abridgement should appeal to girls in the upper elementary grades. lla D. Scott, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alta.
