This book would be a good choice for a bedtime story: it would encourage the creative dreams of any child. Doctor Kiss is a young school-aged girl. We observe her after-school routines of mating dinner and then preparing for bedtime. Her ritual before bedtime includes a story and receiving one million kisses, fifteen hugs, forty squeezes, and five tickles for good luck. When Doctor Kiss's parents dose the door she takes her medical bag and climbs out of her window into a magical world from the age of chivalry. Coming to the aid of a knight who has scraped his knees, she listens to his battle story and bandages his knees. She also administers one million kisses, fifteen hugs, forty squeezes, and five tickles for good luck in order to help the knight go to sleep. The story ends with the return of Doctor Kiss to her home. The author, Teddy Jam, intertwines the story of the everyday, routine life of a young girl with her imagined world of knights and the age of chivalry. This well-done intermingling of stories captures the reader quickly and lots one travel between the two worlds as easily as Doctor Kiss. Winner of the 1991 Governor General's Literary Award for her illustrations in Doctor Kiss, Joanne Fitzgerald has done an excellent job. The story could be told by "reading the pictures. Fitzgerald beautifully captures the everyday and the mystical worlds the author has depicted. Great care has been taken by both artists to blend their two talents. I would highly recommend this story for young children. It is unique in many ways and would encourage young children to stretch their imaginations.
