IS IT OKAY IF THIS MONSTER STAYS FOR LUNCH?
Martyn Godfrey. Illustrated by Susan Wilkinson.
Volume 20 Number 3
This picture-book describes Megan's adventures at the playground by her house. She explains how "weird things like to play there." Each day at the playground Megan meets a new monster playmate and brings a succession of these strange guests home for lunch. Unfortunately, each monster is rejected by different members of her family. They think Megan's imagination is running wild and, in response to having a monster for lunch, they reply, "Monsters can't stay for lunch" or "Oh Megan what an imagination you have!" or "How do you think up such silly things?" This rejection continues through the week until Megan asks permission to invite her friend Michael for lunch. "Of course!" says Megan's mom. Megan is puzzled because Michael could come and her other playmates from that week could not. Her mom explains, "friends can stay for lunch." Megan gleefully invites Denise Dinosaur, Sissy from Saturn, Tammy Troll and Graham Gremlin in for the "finest, funniest, friendliest lunch" her family has ever shared. This humorous "pattern book" combines a playful text full of alliteration with bright, colourful illustrations. It is very helpful for children learning the letters of the alphabet as well as the days of the week.
