College Style Sheet, a product of Vancouver Community College, is just what its title suggests: a style sheet. It does not purport to provide advice on the process of gathering information prior to writing a paper, nor does it discuss the process of composing, drafting and revising. It does point out some of the variations in the discourse expectations for writing in different subject areas, as well as the variations in citation conventions for different disciplines. As the notes on the front cover indicate, it is a "concise and handy guide to the preparation of essays, terms papers, and reports." Both MLA style and APA style are explained, along with footnotes (still used in history and political science papers) and some of the special citation requirements of the sciences and the social sciences. Sample references and citations are provided for the various types of sources from which a student writer might draw material. As well, sample pages are provided, and the book is indexed in order to facilitate ready searching for a specific type of citation. At $4.95, College Style Sheet is definitely an affordable guide if all a student wants or needs is a style sheet. However, for $2.00 more, a student might find Hugh Robertson's Research Essay to be a far better value, providing more sample citations, more information on bibliographic sources, and suggestions on how to actually compose a paper.
