Author Hubert Evans lived in British Columbia for seventy years, writing about the outdoors. He was a prolific author with more than two hundred published short stories, sixty serials, twelve CBC radio plays, and seven books of fiction. The two book under review have been out of print for sixty-five years and have recently been re-issued For stories written in the 1920s they are n all dated, and have retained a freshness and simple charm that I found very appealing. Silversides traces the life of a sockeye salmon from egg through maturity to the final act of spawning, while Bear Stories comprises a series of tales describing the bears hunt and fish, and interact with humans. The author's language is simple and straightforward, though never condescending, and children will find the stories interesting and informative. The black-and-white drawings on each page nicely complement the stories. The books are sturdily bound and should last through many readings. Recommended for Primary and early Intermediate grades.
