The program concentrates on those Italians who settled in Canada after World War II, and we meet a range of these Canadians spanning several generations. The production is presented as a collage of studio interviews, vintage photographs, archival film footage (including some dramatic highlights of the 1972 Canada-Soviet Hockey Series in which Italian-Canadian Phil Esposito was team captain) and present-day footage of life in Italian communities in Canada and in Italy. In the interviews, Italian-Canadians share their first reactions to Canada, their initial struggle to find work, to learn the language and to raise their families. Younger generations discuss their desire to be accepted, and their encounters with racism. Students share their plans for the future. Terranova celebrates the spirit, resourcefulness and pride of Italian-Canadians. It is also a celebration of the rich heritage Italians have brought to Canada and continue to share with other Canadians.
