CIP Grades 6 to 9/Ages 11 to 14 Reviewed by Brenda Reed Volume 20 Number 4 1992 September The twenty slides in The World of the Incas, together with the Inca Scrapbook, are reasonably priced resources on the short-lived Inca empire. The slides present aspects of Inca civilization ranging from their settlements and buildings to their animals, food, tools and boats. The pictures vary from long-range views of Macchu Picchu, the "Lost City of the Incas," and Inca farm "terraces" to close-up shots of Inca artifacts, such as grave dolls. Statues of Manco Capac, the first Inca ruler, and Francisco Pizarro, the Spanish conquistador, are included, as is an example of Inca stone architecture. The students I showed these slides to were interested in the slide of the stone fortress Sacsayhuaman because it shows a doorway that illustrates how the Incas coped without the discovery of the arch. On the whole, the slides are of interest, and they held the attention of the two grade 8 classes I showed them to. A few of the slides are not entirely successful, though, including a mummy wrapped up in blankets that is hard to distinguish, and a few shots of museum artifacts that do not give a sense of how these items were used. The captions for the slides are useful as a guide, but you will want to edit and supplement them. The Inca Scrapbook will help you out here. This forty-eight-page resource is really a student guide, with information on many aspects of Inca life from their clothes to their legends. The topics covered in the slides are all discussed here in detail. The book is sensibly arranged, with one to two pages per topic, black-and-white maps and illustrations, suggested activities, an Inca crossword puzzle, a glossary, a bibliography and an index.
