CIP Grades 3 to 5/Ages 8 to 10 Reviewed by Dave Jenkinson Volume 21 Number 1 1993 January The final volume of a quartet of books about Brupp, an adventurous cat from Prince Edward Island whose quest is to reach the Pacific Ocean, finds him "delivered" to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, after getting trapped in a boxcar in Quebec. In this new locale, Brupp, whose name derives from his mewing sound, befriends an old hobo, Wobbly Tim, and a group of five children, aged four to fourteen, who have run away from an institution for homeless children. Wobbly Tim "adopts" the quintet and helps them with life's necessities, and, when he becomes ill, they secure the needed medical help in the form of Dr. Catherine Antoine, a veterinarian. Some time after hearing Wobbly Tim tell the children a story about Caragana Lil, a girl he had courted in his youth in Alberta but abandoned because he felt unworthy of her, Brupp journeys on and arrives at Lil's Milk River, Alberta, ranch. Believing the ranch would make an excellent home for the children, Brupp "conjures" Tim's image into Lil's mind, and she "decides" to drive to Saskatoon to search for her old friend. When the children are caught by the RCMP and threatened with being separated, Lil and Tim, with Dr. Catherine's help, rescue them in the fashion Brupp had envisaged. After experiencing disquieting dreams/ visions about a fire in his P.E.I, home, Brupp decides to end his year-long odyssey and return to the Island. Though chance plays a large role in advancing the book's plot, young readers will enjoy the emotional relationship that develops between the old man and the parentless children. Some readers who have not read the previous three books in the series may be put off by Kessler's repeated, but undeveloped, references to incidents and characters from previous books.
