WORSE THAN WAR: THE HALIFAX EXPLOSION
Sutow, M. Pauline Murphy
Volume 21 Number 1
An excellent read, well written and informative. The author retells the sad story of the Halifax Explosion on its seventy-fifth anniversary in loving and gentle detail. Her well-chosen title aptly describes Halifax's reaction to this disaster. Reproductions of actual photographs and eye-witness pen-and-ink drawings by Arthur Lismer of the Group of Seven give the reader an added understanding of the situation and a feeling of closeness to the victims. While the book will give children in the middle grades an accurate view of this modern tragedy, it also highlights the love, generosity and care with which the victims of the largest man-made explosion prior to Hiroshima were treated. Highly recommended!
