Volume 21 Number 4 1993 September 19th Century Clothing is every bit as delightful as its eighteenth-century counter­part (reviewed this issue). Hoops, crinolines, hobble skirts, the hourglass figure and corsets are described and illustrated in detail. Men's fashions from hats to neckwear, from coats to galoshes, are also well illustrated, and even underwear is included. By the 1850s cleanliness was being promoted, as the "Saturday-night bath" replaced the "once-a-year" bath, and women began to wash their hair once a month. Sportswear was intro­duced, fashions for children were described in more detail, and simple directions are given for creating pioneer costumes.
