Volume 21 Number 4 1993 September The ten endangered species in this book are the tiger, spotted owl, red wolf, pygmy hippopotamus, python, mountain gorilla, giant armadillo, Queen Alexander's birdwing (a butterfly), orangutan, and aye-aye. Each animal is depicted and discussed on facing pages. What the author has chosen to write would be readily understood by a Primary child, and the illustrations are quite clear. The simplified life histories are almost too brief, and the colour illustrations lack familiar references to allow Primary children to become aware of the animals' size. The brief outlines do not tell us why the animals are on the endangered list, nor are we told how many are left or what population would be adequate. In my opinion, brevity has replaced clarity. The information given is accurate and the illustrations are clear, but the book lacks information necessary to inform the reader as to why these species are endangered. Hugh A.
