Volume 21 Number 4 1993 September Mikey Mite, so named because he is ten years old but small, is his teacher's worst nightmare. He imitates her, fails at math and spelling, and steals food for Attila, the class guinea pig. When Mikey gets labeled a thief, he is teased even more. His friend, Jenny, who narrates the story, sees his good points and is upset when Mikey is suspended because of a misunderstanding and trans­ferred to another room. The book ends happily, because his new teacher is more understanding and makes Mikey feel smarter. This is a sparely written story with minimal description. Only the main character is developed; others are barely introduced and Mrs. Gesundheit, Mikey's teacher, is a mere caricature. However, the large print and frequent cartoon-style illustrations make it suitable as an early novel. The silly names and Mikey's mischievous, clowning nature will appeal to kids.
