Volume 21 Number 4 1993 September Trials and Triumphs is an intelligent, interesting and compact history of Blacks in Canada, and it seems to be a book whose time has come, because the hard cover edition is sold out already. "A synthesis of 400 years of African-Canadian history," it is well suited to children and adults alike. The topics covered are slavery in Canada, African-Canadian settlers and immigrants, Black Canadian churches and schools, Caribbean Canadians, and important people and events in Black Canadian history. Lawrence Hill, the author, has a long­standing interest in Black history, and has been an active member of the Ontario Black History Society for years. Hill has succeeded in his wish to give the children of Canada a readable, entertaining overview of Black history in Canada. The new paperback edition has added a "discussion" page with questions on every chapter. These can be used or not, but they will help children focus on pertinent aspects. Some examples follow: "How were Blacks discriminated against in early Canada?" "Did slavery exist in North America before the Atlantic slave trade? Why?"
