Kindergarten to Grade 4/Ages 5 to 9 Reviewed by Patricia L.M. Butler. Volume 21 Number 5 1993 October Ninety-one-year-old Lilla Stirling has produced many books in her career. This is her story of Timothy, who lives on the beautiful island of Barbados, where the trade winds blow over the blue and purple sea. Timothy decides to enter the annual kite contest and, with loving assistance from Granny, he creates Sally, the beautiful flying fish kite. She flies so high she not only threatens to break the air traffic laws but also she escapes from Timothy's kite string. Through tenacity and the encouragement of Granny, Timothy regains his adventurous kite and wins enough in the contest to replace Granny's new Easter bonnet, which has also been stolen by the wind. A very positive feeling of courage and perseverance is created in this story, assisted by the use of colourful descriptions and illus­trations. The reader is given a vivid introduc­tion to the scenery and way of life on the island, as well as a portrait of a loving relation­ship between grandmother and grandson. Simons has provided both colour and pencil drawings that complement and augment the events and emotions as they unfold. The story­line will capture the attention of readers and listeners in the five- to-nine-year-old group, but its length could have been modified in order to include a younger audience, which might also benefit from the tale.
