Volume 21 Number 5 1993 October This is the third book in the "Micki and Daniel" series featuring the two friends, bold and tireless Micki and the much more retiring Daniel. Micki and Daniel's adventure in A Train to the City is a little more daring than the one in the previous book, The Wedding. This time, the country children and their pets, Pegasus the pony and Ooloo Moolo the parrot, get on a train and set out to explore the big city. While the major portion of the story deals with the actual boarding and riding of the train, Micki and Daniel do wander the city streets for hours. They see many sights, including "old churches, shiny tall skyscrap­ers and bored people's faces." While reading, I wondered how many children would question the issue of Micki and Daniel happily and safely roaming strange streets and parks on their own. And the ending hinted at a bit of a deus ex machine (to this adult mind), but my young audience found it quite acceptable. Once again, Orr's text and Ohi's water-colour illustrations create an unassuming little story - no morals, no lessons taught, no political or environmental issues. Just an enjoyable, old-fashioned listen geared to the youngest school classes. Linda Holeman, a former elementary teacher, now writes full time in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
