THE WEDDING
Wendy Orr
Volume 21 Number 5
In The Wedding, the second book in Wendy Orr's "Micki and Daniel" series, we witness a wedding gone awry due to the animal-loving Micki and Daniel. In a 90s gender twist, Daniel is a dreamy, violin-playing bird-watcher, while female friend Micki is boisterous and (we are told) loves adventurous pastimes like jumping off haystacks and climbing big rocks. Micki and Daniel are members of a wedding party, and much to their dismay are forbidden to bring their pets. But Pegasus, Micki's "round, shaggy pony," and Ooloo Mooloo, Daniel's noisy parrot, are determined to accompany Micki and Daniel. With a little help, they make it to the church. The rest of the story highlights the uproar the animals create - Ooloo Moolo flies to Daniel's shoulder and creates a cacophony, while Daniel plays his violin for the bride and groom. Pegasus manages to munch on the roses from flower girl Micki's arrangement, and even catches the bridal bouquet. Ruth Ohi's water-colour illustrations are detailed and slightly dreamy, like Daniel. This is a simple little adventure book, inexpensive in paperback, for "just fun" reading aimed at the Primary child. Linda Holeman, a former elementary teacher, now writes full time in Winnipeg, Manitoba. |
