This is a nostalgic look at winter sports in rural Canada and the ice rinks, in particular, that were built to accommodate those sports. The long, cold winters of Canada's prairie regions gave rise to a need to do something to pass the time. So the people began to play hockey, to curl, to figure skate and to speed skate on rinks built for the purpose, both indoor and outdoor. The rinks themselves as well as the sports became a part of the way prairie people lived their lives. As a person who grew up with a rink in my back yard, I really enjoyed this film. It brought back m any marvellous memories. The quality is good, especially considering much of the video content is film reproduced from what looks like the 1960s. However, the black-and-white sections are separated from each other by colour segments of the various sports. None of the colour sections bear any relation to either the preceding or the upcoming black-and-white segments. I found that exceedingly annoying and really unnecessary. If you have extra money in the budget and folks who want to indulge in a moment of nostalgia, buy this video. It's fun. C.L.
