Following on the heels of Japan (Crabtree, 1988), China (Crabtree, 1988), and India (Crabtree, 1989) in the successful "Lands, Peoples, and Cultures" series, Bobbie Kalman turns her focus to Canada. Canada: The Land looks at the physical and economic side of our country, covering resources, industry and agriculture. Information is also given on Major Canadian cities and national parks, as well as threats to the environment. Canada: The People discusses our native and immigrant heritages as well as present-day-sociological issues of the family, schools, work and recreation. Canada: The Culture demonstrates various ways that Canadians express their culture through dance, theatre, films, the arts and sports. Canada Celebrates Multiculturalism investigates traditions, heritage days and festivals, both old and new. The writing in all four books is clear and easy to read while the table of contents, glossary, and index ensure the facts can be readily located. Sidebars provide further tidbits of information, and there are suggestions at the end of each book for student involvement. Photographs are bright and appealing, and the texts enhance the grade 4 and 5 social studies curricula in Manitoba. However, there are some flaws. The names and shapes of several of the geographical regions listed in Land are out of date. Also the content tends to centre mainly on the largest cities, and some of the illustrations in Multiculturalism are juvenile. Recommended for school use with some reservations. Carol Carver is a teacher at École Dieppe School in Winnipeg, Manitoba
