CALLING THE SHOT: PROFILES OF WOMEN FILMMAKERS
Janis Cole and Holly Dale

Volume 22 Number 4
Janice Cole and Holly Dale have worked as independent filmmakers in Canada for a number of years and have earned various professional awards. This anthology of interviews with women directors grew out of the research for their film Calling the Shots (1988). Twenty directors discuss their approaches to filmmaking, the roots of their creativity, the role of women in cinema, and numerous other aspects of their art. Their perspectives vary considerably, from experimental to commercial mainstream. Although all are now living in Canada or the United States, they come from various cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Among the filmmakers are Lee Grant, Mira Nair, Euzhane Palcy, Lea Pool, Anne Wheeler and Sandy Wilson. Accompanying each interview are a filmography and a profile of the director. This is a valuable addition to the literature. The interviews and the female perspective are unique. This would be an excellent addition to senior high collections, as it deals both with an interesting medium/career option and with successful role models for young women. Although the book is not unsuitable for younger grades, the fact that it is written in interview style, rather than narrative, may make it more difficult to follow. Recommended for senior high school and up. Christine Jacobs (Montr&eacut;al, Que.) is a freelance indexer who for the past eight years has indexed films and videos for Film/Video Canadiana
