Volume 22 Number 4
Jim Wiese is a Canadian elementary school science teacher. Roller Coaster Science is designed to introduce young readers to simple physics, chemistry, math, earth science, biology and astronomy through a variety of science activities. Roller Coaster Science is divided into four main parts: Playground Activities, Amusement Park Rides, Sports and Recreational Activities and Fun Foods and Games of Chance. The experiments included in each section use real-life situations such as popping popcorn, going down a slide, throwing a frisbee. In this way the reader can relate to the experiment and become introduced to several scientific principles. The format of this book of experiments includes general information, activities with clear step-by-step procedures and explanations to provide the reader with the scientific reasoning for each activity. Amusing illustrations, a glossary and an index as well as tips on how to be a good scientist are also given. Roller Coaster Science introduces young readers to discovering what and why things happen in the world. The experiments can be readily adapted to follow-up activities based on classroom science topics such as simple machines and gravity. Because of the varying degree of difficulty of the scientific principals explored, some readers might require guidance and further explanation for some of the activities.
