LOOKING FOR HOLES

This is a thoroughly enjoyable collection of twenty-two poems by the author of Emily's House¹ The delightful range of subject materials, varied rhyme schemes, and wonderful vocabulary combine with vibrant imaginative artwork to create a pleasurable experience for many age groups. Scharer's characters include Alexander Salamander, Peter the Plumber, and Annie, who "dug the ceiling off and turned it into sky." Scharer poses such questions as "why is it called Queen Street if it hasn't got a Queen?" and provides answers to the confusing question of gravity. In the "Looking for Holes" of the title, we can all empathize with the little boy who tells us, I lost my bottom button hole, I don't know where it's gone, It must have fallen off me When I put my sweater on. Clement's artwork taps beautifully into the whimsical text and adds to the humour of each selection. Reader and listener can both enjoy the colourful slant he provides. This is a collection that can stand on the shelves of the library and home collection with Dennis Lee and Sean O' Huigin.
