This material was developed at the Queen's University Faculty of Education under the auspices of the Canadian Guidance and Counseling Foundation. It was funded by Canada Employment and Immigration. CareerWorld was created for students in co-op work/evaluation preparation courses in grades 10 to 12. It consists of five self-contained modules on self-exploration, occupational choices, supports for success (family, role models, mentors, networks), breaking barriers (harassment, communication, stress, your rights), and life-style choices. Each module consists of activities developed to inform and involve the student. The student kit is designed to go in a ring binder. The sheets are all reproducible masters. The facilitator's manual (teacher's guide) includes the objectives, teaching strategies, and possible answers or results expected from the student activities. The cooperative education teacher in my school had a look at this program and commented on it. He noted that the sections on harassment and stereotyping are better than those in the material he has been using, but the job search and resume are not covered as well. (The Co-operative Education program in my school is more of an enrichment program for top level grade 12 students than a readiness program for at-risk students, for whom CareerWorld is geared.) CareerWorld is a good supplemental book for an enrichment program and a fine basic course for students developing readiness for the work world. Recommended.
