As the title implies, a bike race is central to the story. Matt, the main character, believes that he is the deserving winner of the grand prize, not only because he is fast but also because his own bike is falling apart. His friends, Mike, David and Amanda, however, believe that they too can win. The end result is indeed surprising yet believable. The bike race is not, however, the sole focus of Stinson's fast-paced, easy-to-read story. Relationships between Matt and his peers as well as between Matt and the reclusive man next door are very important to the story. It is through the unfolding of these various friendships that the characters are developed, and young readers should gain insight into human relationships at different levels. This is an excellent story that should appeal to a broad audience in the elementary grades. The Great Pebble Creek Bike Race would be a fine choice for a read-aloud in these grades.
