Grades 11 and up / Ages 16 and up Reviewed by C.L. Ross. Volume 22 Number 6 1994 November/December Women working in the aviation industry are still an anomaly in our society. This film does its best to explain some of the jobs available by letting us meet some of the women who are at present working in this field. We are introduced to an avionics technician, a mechanic, a painter, a sheet metal worker, and an avionics inspector. The film shows these women on the job as they explain not only what they do, but what sort of training they needed to get the job in the first place. We are taken right inside the cockpit of commercial airliners, as well as inside the hangars and repair shops that keep them up in the air. The women to whom we are introduced speak clearly and openly about their job satisfaction, the wages they make, the travel opportunities open to them, and the life-style that these sort of jobs allow them. They make the excellent point that, in order to work in the aviation industry, one needs to have some penchant for mathematics and sciences. These women are all adamant that any other woman wanting to consider this as a career opportunity ought not to shy away from it because it is different or because in most cases they will have to get their hands dirty. The quality of the film is adequate. However, most of the women interviewed sounded nervous and inarticulate. This was sad and a real drawback, as many of them had some excellent things to say about women working in non-traditional jobs. It also needs to be said that all these folks worked for ONE commercial airline, and I did feel skeptical about whether the rosy picture painted was always that rosy. Given those slight flaws, the film is worth purchasing as we still need to be presenting positive role models to working women. This video says much to women in the work force that needs to be heard.
