excerpt:
In their second adventure, Skipper dogs sail to Scotland where they learn that the Stone of Scone has been stolen by a clan of squirrels. The only way they can save the stone is to win a boat race, but the crafty Chief McNutt raced in a motor boat while the dogs had a fishing boat. Feeling sure that they would win, the squirrels stopped for a mug of root beer while the dogs persevered and eventually won the race. The book provides readers with a glimpse of Scotland's ancient structures such as cairns and palaces. The author's water colour illustrations are very attractive and provide additional details to the story. At the back of the book is a brief history of Schipperkes, a breed of little black dogs from Belgium and the Stone of Scone. The English verse scans well and tells the story easily, but the Gaelic is written in prose. It is a good translation of the English but not lyrical and can be read by intermediate students of Gaelic. Recommended for libraries looking for books written in two languages. Highly Recommended.Meredith MacKeen is a teacher-librarian at Glen Stewart Elementary School in Stratford, PE.
