Susan Hood has written another delightful book starring two canine friends in Pup and Hound at Sea. In this tale, Pup discovers a raft that Hound helps him push into the water. The two jump aboard and head off down the river with Pup as the pirate captain and Hound as the reluctant crew member. After making some frogs walk the plank, they run into some trouble:
Although the raft comes to a splintering end, Hound and Pup save themselves, and Pup discovers some pirate treasure which he shares with Hound. Each page contains only a sentence or two so that early readers can get through the whole book without much trouble. The sentences are written with a rhythm and rhyme scheme that will help early readers to guess what word might be coming next. Each page also contains a colorful illustration by Linda Hendry that matches the tone of the story and will assist readers in following the story even if they can't read the words. This book is a lot of fun and a great way to introduce children to reading. Highly Recommended. Lisa O'Hara is a mother of three and librarian in Winnipeg, MB.
