Originally published in 2000 and winner of the Elisabeth Mrazik Cleaver Picture Book Award, this delightful book has been reissued in a smaller size (named the "Mini Stella" series by the publisher) which is just right for little readers. In this second story about siblings Stella and Sam, big sister Stella imparts the joys of a first snowfall to her younger brother Sam. Having never seen snow, Sam is full of a curiosity that varies between avid interest and uneasy apprehension. Bombarding Stella with a myriad of questions, Sam moves hesitantly into the unfamiliar snow-clad landscape while Stella launches forth with reassuring certainty, creating answers to his questions with her own unique blend of fact and fabrication.

The watery blues and greys of Marie-Louise Gay's snow-covered sceneries are perfectly rendered by her watercolour and line medium. She uses space to effect but still manages to tuck in little details of birds and other fauna that young children will enjoy discovering, including Sam's dog Fred (who features more prominently in later Stella books) and who is always nearby, happily foraging through the snow.
