excerpt:
Young nature enthusiasts will appreciate this colourful and informative pamphlet whether they are looking for pebbles on the beach, in their backyard or elsewhere. This field guide, designed specifically for British Columbia, discusses minerals in our daily lives in addition to providing guidance in the identification of different types of pebbles. The author, a geologist, identifies 28 rocks and minerals using vivid description and large, clear and beautiful photographs. She writes about the formation of pebbles and the movement of rock, and also distinguishes between igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. Her style of writing is light and includes puns and humor, turning the dry facts into an engaging read. She uses technical and specific terms, but always includes a definition and a context that encourages young readers to learn new vocabulary rather than frustrating them. The design of the guide is excellent- an accordion fold gives sufficient room for the extensive information inside while making it easy to access parts or all of the writing without difficulty while pebble hunting. The sturdy paper and lamination are essential details which ensure that the pamphlet will be enjoyed for many years of trips to the beach or forest. A Field Guide to the Identification of Pebbles is likely to spark an interest in geology in many readers. Luckily, it provides an imaginative list titled "Where to go from here?" which includes many interactive options for the young "rockhound"- from joining a local group to finding out about Earth Day activities. This excellent guide accomplishes everything a pamphlet of this sort should aspire to do- it informs, inspires and excites. Highly Recommended. Reece Steinberg is a librarian for the Business & Science Division and Virtual Library at Vancouver Public Library.
