excerpt:
Let there be no mistake. Good Granny / Bad Granny, as McHugh's "Introduction" makes quite clear, is not a book written for children but is, rather, one addressed to grandmothers, likely new ones. However, the book's humourous contents, which consist of a series of 40+ contrasts in grandmothers' behaviours, could be used by teachers as a model for student writing activities. After a teacher shares some of the contrasted behaviours, the children and/or adolescents could be invited to create or be given types of people or animals and then be asked to create their own series of contrasts. What canine owner hasn't said "Good dog/bad dog?" Each pair of facing pages contains a single contrast with the words supported by Patricia Storms' lighthearted cartoon illustrations. The above writing activity could then be extended into an art activity. Recommended with reservations. Dave Jenkinson, a good (?) grandfather of three, lives in Winnipeg, MB, where he edits CM.
