internal artJazlyn J Expresses Herself follows a conversation between a mother and her young daughter, Jazlyn, as they talk about the various ways that people express themselves. They talk about facial expressions, and they try various expressions such as anger, surprise, happiness and sadness. They also talk about how people communicate in other ways, through talking, drawing, painting, and dancing. That night, when Jazlyn is getting ready to go to sleep, she tells her parents:

"Well, I had lots of fun playing outside today. I also had fun learning that I can express myself in so many different ways and I had a great time with Mom showing me some of them today!" She hugged her mom and dad and as she did she realized that she was showing them how she felt. She was expressing how much she loved them. With that, she squeezed a little harder!

Robin Oakes' illustrations are brightly coloured and very full of expression, a style which is, of course, appropriate for this story! The story is perfect to read-aloud to a class or to a single child because there are full-age illustrations and only a few sentences on each page.

Recommended.
