excerpt: In this amusing picture book, Frieda Wishinsky explores a topic that many royal-watchers have wondered about over the years: what does the queen carry in that ever-present purse? By making a small girl, Kay, ask the question and suggest possible answers, Wishinsky gives us a light-hearted dialogue that young children will enjoy. Wishinsky never quite reveals the secret, however. That is left up to the child readers imagination. Wishinsky is an author who has written for all ages. Her best known picture books are the Please, Louise! series, but she is also known for Oonga Boonga and Youre Mean, Lily Jean. The illustrator, Loufane, lives and works in Montreal. Her pictures are large and colourful, in a semi-cartoon style. Recommended. Helen Norrie, a former teacher-librarian, reviews childrens books for the Winnipeg Free Press.
