Oymyakon is a small village in Russia. The temperature in Oymyakon can be three times as cold as your freezer! Oymyakon is the coldest inhabited place on Earth.
Extreme Places introduces readers to many different types of environments on Earth. It teaches readers the coldest, hottest, wettest, driest, most polluted, most remote places on Earth as well as what it is like living in an earthquake and flood zone. Each topic consists of two pages of information. Readers will learn what the residents of these unconventional places do to survive there. The book has several "Did You Know" and “I Don’t Believe It?” sections that provide many interesting facts about the location. The back of the book is also filled with information. It contains a glossary of words that had been bolded in the text so readers can easily look up some of the words that they may not be familiar with. The volume has an index for quick reference. It also has a “Further Information” section that lists both books and web sites for anyone wanting more information on this topic.
Extreme Places is both educational and engaging. It uses large print and has short paragraphs consisting of two or three sentences and has many colourful photographs which will make it appealing to young readers.
