CM . . .
. Volume XVIII Number 25. . . .March 2, 2012
The contents of Zoe's Year will not be new to followers of Barbara Reid's work as this volume is simply a compilation of Reid's four "seasonal" board books that first appeared as wordless books in 1991 (CM. Archive, Vol. 20, No. 2, March, 1992) and which were then republished with brief texts in 2001 (CM, Vol. VIII, No. 9, January 4, 2002). The widths and heights of the books have increased with each new edition. This newest iteration of the books begins with Zoe's Rainy Day and continues chronologically through the seasons, concluding naturally with Zoe's Winter. Comparing the collected volume with the four books in the 2001 edition reveals that, in the main, the only slight changes relate to image croppings to accommodate the book's new dimensions. Each "book" in Zoe's Year is introduced by a double-page spread which is actually the front and back covers of the original book. As the back cover was originally designed to leave text space for CIP and other publication information, the left portion of the spread is, in two instances, left with a bit of a gap. Even though some two decades have passed since Zoe first was introduced to toddlers, she and her seasonal activities are still engaging. And at $9.99, the book is a real bargain. An obvious baby shower gift, Zoe's Year is a must-have for home collections as well as any libraries serving the toddler set. Highly Recommended. Dave Jenkinson, CM's editor, lives in Winnipeg, MB, a city which truly experiences all of the seasons.
