With the above sign posted even before the title page, Roslyn Schawtz intrigues her young readers to explore further the tale of two brothers on a search for food.... any kind of food. And it seems that plants and flowers will no longer suffice. The smell of pepperoni pizza, scavenged from the garbage by a cat, will fit the bill nicely. In their sneaky and clever way, the brothers are able to snag the pizza, but they, in turn, are duped out of their delectable meal by an invasion of ants and a noisy crow.
Winner of the Vicky Metcalf Award, the talented Schwatz doesn’t disappoint. The clever narrative is told in comic book style, with hilarious, yet sparse dialogue and packed full of sounds, gestures, repetition and onomatopoeia. Pencil coloured illustrations are in harmony with the simple text. Like Schwartz ‘s series, the “Mole Sisters,” there is minimal text, but the drawings are full of action and move the story forward. This simple tale is a buffet of pleasures and will bounce off the page and into the hearts of young readers, especially if read aloud in a one-on-one setting. Recommended. Still hungry, the bickering brothers spy a half-eaten donut, providing a tasty snack to several birds, while that same pesky cat spies them as a possible dinner time treat. This time, the ravenous rodents are saved by a dinner bell, distracting the cat, and they land in a tasty strawberry patch.
