CM . . . . Volume XIX Number 11 . . . . November 16, 2012
excerpt:
Napier, who introduced the little format with Little Canada, now begins the Little Sports series with Little Hockey. Future volumes will include baseball, basketball, football and soccer. As was the case with Little Canada, each recto in Little Hockey presents a four line rhyming riddle that is contained within a box which, in turn, is superimposed on a visual hint. Turning the page reveals the answer on the verso along with a new illustration of the riddles object. For example, the riddle found in the excerpt above covered most of a close-up illustration of a pair of skates while the Answer: Skates artwork revealed a pair of skates spraying up snowas the skater came to a sudden stop. The other nine riddles involve identifying a hockey puck, helmet, goalie, referee, hockey jersey, stick, teammates, ice and hockey gloves. The youngsters portrayed in some of the answer illustrations represent Canadas multicultural makeup and reflect that both boys and girls play the sport. Obviously, the contents of Little Hockey are but a brief introduction to both the sport and the vocabulary of hockey. Nevertheless, this board book is still a worthy home and library purchase. Recommended. Dave Jenkinson, CMs editor, lives in Winnipeg, MB.
