In Sky Color, the third book in Reynolds’ “Creatrilogy” series, Marisol and her classmates plan and create the mural for the new school library. Marisol declares she will paint the sky of the mural, but she is left with a challenge: “How am I going to make the sky without blue paint?” Nonetheless, as she observes the states of the sky, its colourful transformation from day to night and its various shades of rainy day greys, Marisol is inspired. The budding artist decides to incorporate the myriad of beautiful colours she sees in the sky: red, orange, yellow, green, and purple, resulting in a striking masterpiece. “This one, that one. She swirled the brush to make an altogether new color.”
I would highly recommend this picture book for school, public, and personal library collections. Readers will be captivated by the rich and warm-hued watercolour brushstroke and will be left to absorb the striking final two wordless pages of the story. Highly Recommended. Reynolds’ story is an absolutely beautiful tale of creativity, and it will inspire early readers and young artists to experiment with their paint pallets and, most importantly, their ideas. Sky Color is a story that will kindle the imagination and encourage children to think beyond the blue paint.
