Welcome to CM, the national, electronic reviewing journal of Canadian materials for young people.

Why has CM shifted to publishing electronically? Some people think the internet will be the agent of a radical transformation in human culture; others laugh and jeer. Time will tell. But we're publishing CM electronically not for the sake of jumping on the hi-tech bandwagon, but because it lets us offer both readers and publishers services that printed material can't.

Some of those services -- sound or video clips, for example, or electronic ordering -- will have to wait until our technical capabilities, or yours, catch up to our plans. Nonetheless, the nature of the medium provides some advantages to everyone right away, whether you're reading CM with a graphic world-wide-web browser or simply through e-mail:

Timeliness

With a weekly schedule, no worries about printing, and the ability to communicate with publishers, reviewers, and readers electronically, we'll get you the most up-to-date reviews possible. In many cases, you'll be able to read our evaluations and order materials in advance of actual publication.

Depth

The internet has given more people quick access to more information than ever before. But if it has real significance, it's not in providing merely more information, but deeper information. Since CM doesn't have to worry about fitting our content to a certain number of pages, we'll be able to include more substance in our reviews; advertisers will be able to provide more depth and content.

Like any new venture, expect the new, electronic CM to change and improve quickly. And because we're working in a medium whose nature is change, we'll always be scrambling to keep on top of what's possible for us, our readers, and advertisers. But the essential goal of the project will remain the same:quality, in-depth, and timely coverage of Canadian materials for young people. Let us know how we're doing.
