called ‘Do You Know?” which serves up science with a large helping of humour to young readers. It’s written and illustrated in graphic novel style, with leeches shown in bright, animated cartoons to reveal scientific facts.
Here’s a fun, up-to-date way to deliver a basic look at a science topic with a degree of “gross” to attract kids. The lively and amusing depictions of leeches at work will be easily remembered while the facts are learned, e.g. the leeches in evening dress eagerly contemplating a cellar full of expired critters demonstrate the fact that “Some leeches feed on dead animals.” This little book even has an index to facilitate quick location of the details, a feature that could entice reluctant readers to try basic research. Or it might offer teachers an appealing way to teach the use of the index. Challenging vocabulary is printed in bold type, and defined in a Glossary.
