internal artAs the title implies, Baseball Opposites is a book that uses examples from baseball to describe opposites through simple sentences. The opposite words in each sentence are either bolded or employ word art to help depict meaning; for example, the word “hot” is flaming, and the word “cold” is crusted with ice. Each page reiterates the featured opposite words by restating them in either the top or bottom corners of the spread. Almost all of the opposites are generic (on/off, small/big), but some baseball terms make their way into the featured opposites (safe/out). The text is large, and sentences are simple but do include many baseball terms.

Images in this book include full-colour photographs of stadiums, players and baseball moments which reflect the opposite described in each spread. While many of these photographs pair well with the text, others do not; for example, left/right is compared using images of opposite hitters, but the angle of the photograph does not make this opposite clear.

internal art      Baseball Opposites will appeal to a very specific audience, and readers need to be familiar with baseball to appreciate the descriptions of opposites. The book features a glossary of baseball terms; however, considering the presentation of the book as “an Official MLB Publication”, readers should already be familiar with the terms described. The short form MLB (for Major League Baseball) is used with no explanation for readers unfamiliar with the league. This book caters more to a baseball audience than parents and children exploring early concepts.

There is one other title currently available in the Major League Baseball licensed books - Baseball Animals.
