What Can You Do With Only One Shoe? combines silly poems about recycled materials with photographs of old items used in a new way and cartoon images of how these items may have made the transition from old to new. Some examples of items that have been reinvented include a boat turned on its end and used as a bench, a shopping cart revamped into a chair and a toilet used as a planter for flowers. The cartoon images are whimsical and humorous, leading the reader to imagine how one thing may become another with the photographs provided as proof that it can be done. Poems vary in length from a few lines to a few stanzas.
Simon and Sheryl Shapiro have worked together to write four other books for young readers: Better Together, Ladybugs Have Lots of Spots, Slither Slide, What's Outside? and Zebra Stripes Go Head to Toe. What Can You Do With Only One Shoe? is the first book by the Shapiros that has been illustrated by Francis Blake. Recommended. Kate Hachborn is a library technician at the W. This is a quirky book that addresses many topics at once. Recycling, reinvention, crafting and imagination are all expressed through poetry and images. While the book speaks to many topics, it is essentially a poetry collection. Readers looking for an informational or "how-to" book may be disappointed, but the funny poems and colourful cartoons will draw readers in despite potentially false expectations.
